Q: I am fairly tech-savvy, but this one has me flummoxed. Embedded photos no longer show in received emails. They do appear, however, when I open the Reply or Forward option. I have checked my settings repeatedly. We have 5 matched computers (exact same hardware/software, etc) and settings all match. Mine is the only one with this problem. It seems I recall having this issue once before, but I can't recall the solution. Maybe clearing out a cache or something? - M. Kathleen Howard. A: Just about all modern
e-mail clients automatically suppress images in received e-mails.
That's because there are malicious techniques that can gain personal
information using a specially-formed URL for the image. Typically you
get an infobar at the top of the message with a statement like, "Some
pictures have been blocked to help prevent the sender from identifying
your computer. Click here to download pictures."
I know you said you checked all the settings, but the fact that the
images show up when you reply or forward really suggests this is the
problem. By replying or forwarding, you've indicated you believe the
message to be valid, so the e-mail client allows display of the images.
It's possible to turn off this protection. The exact technique would
depend on which e-mail client you use. For example, in Outlook 2007,
you'd select Trust Center from the Tools menu, click the Automatic
Download item at left, and un-check the box titled "Don't download
pictures automatically..." However, I wouldn't recommend that. There's
a real purpose behind suppressing the pictures. Just click the infobar
and request the pictures when viewing a valid message. - Neil J.
