Kidlandia, a fanciful map-creation site for kids, has added new interactive features called KID
Maps. Before the upgrade, the site featured three simple map templates to
choose from and the ability to name the map and cities of your child's
world. Now, kids can spend hours with customization, placing, and editing kreechurs (Kidlandia's own mythical-type beings), town histories,
buildings, and many more features.(All this is free, but you can also order a custom print of the map, if you'd like.)"The new interactive features at Kidlandia present a fun and
educational experience that revolves around the child building his or
her identity. It's not like eating broccoli - they are king or queen!"
said Brian Backus, Kidlandia CEO and Founder, and the father of twin boys.
"Now with KID Maps, children can learn about maps and the natural world
while also gaining knowledge about their family origins. In turn, they
become the main character in their personalized library of family
stories, in a kingdom of their own."
The Map Wizard starts parents and kids off with the three basic map
templates. From there kids can name their
glorious world--well, why not name it after the child? And what kind of
ruler should he/she be--a king, or perhaps an empress? More after the jump.
The
Map Wizard then asks for suggestions for city and
place names by having kids enter the names of cousins, aunts, pets, and even favorite
foods. The names give personal value to the map, and tell a
story about the family. Under a city's name, kids can
write a real history about relatives or make up a silly fantasy:
Tell a story about Carol Bay and Brian Island being warring pirate
nations, or invent Video Island, known for its population of wide-eyed creatures called
"gamers."
When they're happy with their creation, kids can save or even print out
their new world. Share the world with friends and relatives by
e-mailing a personalized URL, or make their
world a gift by purchasing a printed map, which comes in gallery wrapped canvas or on a canvas scroll. Sizes ranges from 12 by 16 inches to 24 by 32 inches, and prices range from
$39.95 to $179.95.
The Kidlandia Web site can help parents tell their children about
family history in a fun, interactive, and even educational environment. Children can put
letters and words to names, recognizing the symbols they see to mean
something personal to themselves. To find out more detailed information please visit the Kidlandia site.
