Q: On booting my PC, I am now receiving this message: "A duplicate name exists on the network." This does not cause any problems at all, but I'm wondering why it occurs, and [I'm looking for] a way of resolving (clearing) this message. - John Zebedee. A: This message usually means
exactly what it says - you have another computer on your home network
with exactly the same internal name. That could cause a problem if you
were to reference this computer across the network by name. Apparently
you don't, so the easiest thing is to just change the name.
If you're using XP, right-click My Computer, choose Properties, and
click the Computer Name tab. If it's Vista or Windows 7, right-click
Computer, choose Properties, click the "Advanced system settings" link
and then click the Computer Name tab. Click the Change button and enter
a descriptive name for the computer using letters, numbers, hyphen, but
no other characters. Click OK, OK and reboot when prompted. That should
get rid of the unwanted message. - Neil J. Rubenking.
